What are you most excited about for the UQWN in 2021?

The UQWN has many fresh and innovating events lined up for 2021 that I am so excited for both our members and sponsors to experience. As a new society, we are lucky to be flexible in what we offer to suit the needs of our dedicated members. In 2021, I am eager to continue to grow the UQWN and equip our members with the skills, confidence and network to thrive!

What impact do you hope to have in your role?

In 2021, I hope to contribute to the foundation of the UQWN across the university; driving the growth of a burgeoning and inclusive network. I hope to continue to build a female focussed community where students can be equipped with the confidence and ambition to thrive in their professional careers.  It's why I'm proud to be apart of UQWN - it acts as that crucial social and professional ecosystem for female students at UQ.

What do you want to gain from UQWN?

I would like to build new friendships and create a strong network of women who are passionate about their goals beyond university.

Why do you think it is important to have a women focused society at UQ?

I believe UQWN will play a key role in bringing together like-minded women in a supportive network in which they feel comfortable and empowered. To have a network that encourages and enables women to participate in extracurricular activities will open up personal and professional opportunities. Having had personal experience with feeling daunted by such activities in my former years of study, our  society will provide a network of support that promotes involvement and creates lasting connections.

Why do you think it is important to have a women-focused society at UQ?

When applying for roles, males will submit their application if they can check off 60% of its criteria; females will only apply if they check 100%. The UQWN allows this lack of confidence present within females to be amended. Insights from like-minded women is shared, inspiring others to pursue such careers and break down gender barriers.

Why did you join the UQWN?

I joined UQ Women’s Network as I am passionate about lifting other women up and empowering them to realise their full potential. I am excited to play a small role in providing real world opportunities for all members who join our collective.

What impact do you hope to have in your role?

Through my role, I hope to have an impact on the engagement of members by critically analysing the responses to past events and strategising ways in which they can be improved for the future. I look forward to reflecting on our achievements  and developing them to further increase participation within the society in 2021.

What motivated you to join the UQWN?

Through attending a variety of UQWN events, I discovered how professional, encouraging, and purposeful the network really was. This, coupled with my personal passion for gender diversity within workplaces, ignited my interest to join. This personal passion stems from previous work experience roles within the male-dominated field of engineering, where the issue was first made aware to me. I’ve come to understand that we are living in a time that demands the best from industry -  how could we ever achieve the best without everyone involved?

Why are you excited about your position with the UQWN?

My biggest struggle throughout university, was identifying where to start to reach my career goals. As a member, the exposure to professional and personal networking events allowed me to gain confidence in grasping all career opportunities. I am excited about my position, as I can contribute in making the same positive impact joining had on me for other UQWN members.

Why are you excited to join the UQWN?

I am super excited to join the network this year and connect with like-minded and inspired future leaders from across all faculties. I can’t wait to get involved in the events we have planned, and hear from peers and industry leaders on their experiences. What advice would you give to a first year?

You’re not too young to get involved and start building your network. Involvement in clubs and societies from first year demonstrates genuine interest and puts you in an ideal position to be considered for future leadership roles within the club. Not to mention, they’re heaps of fun and where I’ve made most of my friends at UQ.

Why are you excited about your position with UQWN?

I am excited to meet lots of amazing women, to hear about their networking experiences and share ideas for UQWN this year. I’m also excited to gain insight into various career pathways and open doors for myself and all other UQWN members.

Why do you feel like there is a need for a society like UQWN?

We need a community that will not only support but will help to create ambitious women. You can’t expect to see change without implementing any, which is why a strong network of young women at the university, creating opportunities and events for one another could not be more of a step in the right direction.

What are you most excited about for UQWN in 2020?

I’m excited to see students step out of their comfort zone, get involved and take control of their futures! I am lucky enough to be surrounded by so many talented and successful young women and I hope that the UQWN can provide an opportunity to meet like-minded people and support one another in any future endeavours.

What do you think makes us different compared to other societies?

I applied to be apart of the UQWN team because it was the first society at UQ that was focused on women’s empowerment.  It's a society founded by like-minded women who are passionate about helping other women achieve their personal and career goals. I hope to bring my skills to help further develop this society.

What do you think makes UQWN different to other societies?

The UQWN is unique in that it is diverse, multidisciplinary, and provides equal opportunities for all students to explore and learn about various career pathways within their field. Particularly, what I believe makes it different is that it offers a range of events from workshops to panel discussions, where students can actively engage with industry professionals, like-minded peers, and build a strong foundation.
